Abandoned Phoenixville Tunnel

Abandoned Phoenixville Tunnel

The Phoenixville Tunnel, once known as the Fairview Tunnel, was built in 1884 as part of the Pennsylvania Schuylkill Valley Railroad in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Measuring about 810 feet long, the tunnel runs just west of Fairview Street, passing beneath Fillmore Street. It was later taken over by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Following World War I, growing competition from cars and trucks led to the end of passenger train services in 1928, although freight trains continued to operate. Conrail used the line between Kimberton and Phoenixville until the 1980s when it was abandoned. Today, the tunnel lies in disrepair, with much of its original brickwork deteriorating. A significant section of the ceiling has collapsed under Fillmore Street, resulting in a three-ton weight limit for vehicles on the road above.

Hi there! I’m an avid hiker with a deep love for discovering forgotten ruins hidden in the forests. There’s something truly mesmerizing about nature reclaiming what was once human-made—it’s a powerful reminder of time’s passage and the stories we risk losing. As history quietly fades, I’ve made it my mission to explore, learn, and document these remnants before they’re lost forever. I’ve authored two books: Abandoned on Public Lands in New Jersey and Abandoned Ruins of Eastern Pennsylvania: Remnants Lost in Time. I’ve also contributed to Jersey’s Best Magazine, writing for the Uncovering NJ column. I plan on getting to more US history than just the Northeast. Stay tuned!
